ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the value of integrating the teaching of course content and transferable skills in project-based and other courses. It offers several strategies and examples of skill and content integration in the areas of values, teamwork, research, writing, presenting, and cultural awareness. The chapter discusses the challenges of integrating content and skill in courses. Accreditation and quality assurance agencies in the United States, in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere have identified a number of transferable skills that they see as essential to develop in higher education. These include oral and written communication, teamwork, research skills, ethics and values, critical thinking, recognition and valuing of diversity, global and multicultural competency, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings in order to assess and solve problems. Teamwork is one of the transferable skills considered essential to develop in higher education. Among the many aspects of writing students need to learn and practice is evidence-based writing.
