ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the (actual) voices of the next generation-their students-need to play a vital role in revitalizing the civic mission of higher education. College students have been at the forefront of the shift toward collaborative engagement in higher education. Students are building reciprocal relationships with a diverse mix of partners in the community, leading efforts to make campus policies more equitable and just, and practicing more inclusive, relational, and open politics. Campus Compact launched Raise Your Voice with the audacious goal of increasing civic engagement among college students at a time when many thought young people would simply not be interested in public life. Many programmatic and course-related models for this new type of student civic engagement were documented from Raise Your Voice using the concept and values of seeing “students as colleagues”, which came to include programmatic strategies such as student service scholarships, collaborative community-based research, staffing models for community partnerships, and leadership in facilitating courses.
