ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by presenting the background to development of the collaborative engagement research paradigm and articulate some of the differences between traditional and collaborative engagement research. Vignettes of collaborative engagement researchers are shared to illustrate the characteristics and core values of community-driven priorities where knowledge is cocreated via shared decision making for the purpose of social change. The successful cooperation between traditional and publicly engaged research methodologies demonstrates increased public impact in the collaborative engagement research paradigm. Community-based participatory research as an orientation to research is important to consider in the development of a collaborative engagement research frame. To accomplish action-oriented research with a social change focus, the collaborative engagement research frame demands equitable collaboration between the academic researchers and the community partners outside higher education. The chapter concludes with recommendations that serve as indicators of collaborative engagement research.
