ABSTRACT

With the dramatic increase in multicultural learners, it has become increasingly important for universities to reaffirm their commitment to provide a quality education for all students. At many institutions it has become necessary to develop a university-wide strategy specifically for African-American students. Recognizing the considerable task a university has to attract, recruit, and retain African Americans, all colleges, campuses, and departments can profit from a concerted effort to share programs and resources. The assistant director of retention services manages the day-to-day cross-functional retention initiatives and programs for the department. The university is committed to developing, implementing, and assessing a five-year plan to improve the retention and graduation rates of multicultural students. The assistant director of multicultural counseling services is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the four ethnic centers. The counselor for the Chicano/Latino Student Center is responsible for the day-to-day management of the center, supervision of staff, planning and implementing programs, and so forth.
