ABSTRACT

One of the realities of the journey to arriving in the traditional sense is that everyone cannot rise to the top of the organizational chart. Entrance into the student affairs profession is not a goal to which undergraduates necessarily aspire. It takes a great deal of courage in some ways to commit to student affairs as a profession. Compensation continues to be an issue, particularly since position requirements can vary so widely from institution to institution. Content plateauing occurs when people know their work well, have become experts at the task, and are likely to be bored. Mid-career is frequently the point where organizational practices and life responsibilities intersect. Mid-career seems to be the time when many professionals can make their greatest contributions to organizations, given their experiences and wisdom.
