ABSTRACT

External funding of scholarly work has become increasingly critical to the success as faculty members while also becoming increasingly competitive to garner. This chapter provides readers with information about the types of grants and funding them can seek, as well as guidance about how to write proposals. It begins by talking about the why of writing grants before giving a broad overview of types of grants. The chapter looks at how to prepare for and write a strong proposal (narrative, budget, etc.) and responding to proposal reviews, before offering a few words on managing a grant once they have received it. One need to address compliance issues, consider reporting requirements, and work with the postaward staff on campus who help one with the fiscal side of the grant. The two broad classes of funding for faculty are internal funding from the campus budget and external funding from an off-campus entity.
