ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nature of faculty service. Service takes place at multiple levels inside and outside the institution. After exploring types of service, the chapter examines ways to chart the course as an academic citizen, navigating the complexities of making choices and doing the right level of service. The wide variety of service opportunities ranges from serving the department to the campus and the local community to the profession or discipline. The world of service, or academic citizenship, is far more varied and complicated than most early career faculty are aware of when stepping into their role and something they are generally not well-prepared for during graduate studies. Faculty often find synergies between their teaching or research interests and providing service at various levels. Done without intentionality, service can be time-consuming, interfere with the other faculty work, and strain the collegial relationships.
