ABSTRACT

One of the greatest challenges for faculty members is finding a balance between their personal and professional lives. This chapter gives readers strategies and tools that they can use to find balance in their work as a scholar. It explains how much and where faculty work, as well as some of the consequences that can come from common work patterns. The chapter examines advice from others about why seeking balance is so important—and what it looks like—as well as why it can be so difficult to achieve. It helps readers to take ownership of their career and be an agent in choices about how they spend their professional time, and offers strategies for being effective and efficient at finding balance. Much like doing high-quality scholarly or creative activity, finding professional and work-life balance is not achieved by doing any single thing.
