ABSTRACT

Some dilemmas that early career faculty face transcend clean categorization. This chapter identifies some of the most significant dilemmas people may face early in their career. For each dilemma, it defines what the problem might be. The chapter explores some possible strategies, approaches, or considerations as one go about solving the difficult dilemma. Part of navigating and shaping the faculty career is understanding that one will face challenges and dilemmas along the way. Navigating these dilemmas, however, can provide them with significant opportunities for growth, development, and ongoing success. For example, negotiating strategically and professionally may help them shape their career in positive ways. The key is to remember to pause, think carefully about their needs and goals, and map out a strategy that is likely to help them build the career they wish to have.
