ABSTRACT

This chapter helps readers to think about teaching as a part of their faculty career. It looks at the way teaching and learning evolved in higher education before turning to specific teaching-related topics. The chapter considers how the social identities may impact how one approach teaching and classroom experiences, and deals with exercises and activities one can use for growing and developing as an educator. It provides some ideas for how to learn about the culture around teaching and assessment in the department. In addition to changing expectations about teaching and learning, higher education is also serving an increasingly diverse student population, one with characteristics that are decidedly different from students of 40 or 50 years ago. Receiving the results of the course evaluations can be one of the most challenging and even emotional aspects of the teaching part of faculty life.
