ABSTRACT

This chapter offers ways to learn about the scholarly expectations at the university and strategies to establish the research agenda and produce quality products that have the highest impact, without having a negative impact on the overall sense of well-being. The scholarly identity may be well on its way to maturation early in the career. The main step in developing a research or scholarly program as a faculty member is identifying the research expectations of the institution and considering how these expectations intersect with the traditions and norms in the discipline. In a national study of faculty, 84% of faculty at public institutions and 89% of faculty at private institutions believed that enhancing the institution’s national image was a highest or high priority, and doing so is often linked to scholarly productivity and prestige. Inquiry, discovery, and creation are the hallmarks of scholarship at the university.
