ABSTRACT

This chapter examines higher education institutions and changes within them and proposes a strategy for facilitating change to social justice education. The strategy involves a teaching and learning model for practicing social justice education and collaborations fostered by the institution's academic development leadership. In 1988 Birnbaum published his now oft-quoted book, How Colleges Work: The Cybernetics of Academic Organization and Leadership. In it he presents four models of higher education governance, organization, and leadership: the collegial, the bureaucratic, the political, and the anarchical. Because social justice education advances a culture of social justice in higher education, teaching and learning would necessarily be at the heart of a change. Grounded in theories and models, academic developers have the resources required to understand higher education institutions and change within them. Skilled in faculty, instructional, and organizational developments, they can facilitate the change process through their programs and services.
