ABSTRACT

Social class needs to be included in social justice work in higher education. To effectively create inclusion in the academy, social class has to be part of the work. The work as educators is to understand intersectionality so we can engage and shift those institutional structures and systems toward social justice. Race, gender, gender identity, disability, sexuality, geography, and family structure were mentioned intersecting identities that led to individuals’ unique experiences. To create more inclusion within higher education requires college campuses to openly engage social class; otherwise poor and working-class folks will continue to be system outsiders. Intersectionality has been added to and reframed in various academic disciplines. The model of multiple dimensions of identity builds on the concept of intersecting identities with the integration of marginalized and privileged identities and other components involved in one’s life.
