ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that the pedagogy of immersion, long considered a gold standard for learning in study abroad programs, now joins a host of other educational initiatives coming under both skeptical scrutiny and friendly reconsideration. The regionwide Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia "promotes the development of higher education policy, practice and the study of teaching and learning" while universities in Australia support SOTL through a variety of institutional, disciplinary, and national programs that advocate learning assessment. In the United States, active and collaborative learning techniques have taken hold in many universities, and many professors now provide typed class notes and extensive slide presentations. US students used to such methods may benefit from help orienting to foreign universities that rely on the traditional lecture method. Learning communities, teaching center events, and other sites of public exchange can help to spread this fresh approach to learning abroad while preserving its emphasis on context, responsiveness, and opportunity.
