ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors describe how the College of Engineering is attempting to integrate mobile wireless computing and inquiry-guided learning into the curriculum for the students. They begin by providing the details of the Mobile Computing Pilot Program, provide several instructors experiences with integrating laptops into their courses, and summarize current assessment of the program related to inquiry-guided learning. The College of Engineering Mobile Computing Pilot Program is designed to allow faculty and students to collaborate on how to use the flexibility provided by wireless Internet access to enrich the classroom experience and improve learning. Inquiry-guided learning principles are being successfully incorporated into many courses being offered in the College of Engineering. The success of this effort is due in part to the growing awareness at NCSU of the role inquiry-guided learning can play in engineering education, and the campus-wide access by the faculty to resources for integration of IGL principles into their instructional efforts.
