ABSTRACT

All facets of the initiative share a commitment to four broad student learning outcomes: critical thinking, developing habits of independent inquiry, responsibility for one’s own learning, and intellectual growth and development; and promoting student learning through the active investigation of complex questions and problems. Like all good stories, the story of the Inquiry-guided learning (IGL) effort at NCSU was well under way before anyone realized there was anything happening at all. To support the departmental teams, the project provided a program of retreats, seminars and workshops, outside speakers, luncheons, and the like. Over the past three and one-half years, after two extensions on the grant, departmental teams have made significant progress in moving toward the project goals. Over the past seven years the people have developed successful programs like the First Year Inquiry Program that cut across departments.
