ABSTRACT

The 1992 Rio Earth Summit resulted in an action plan called Agenda 21 that outlined a set of principles and practices to assist governments and agencies in implementing sustainable development 1 policies and programs. Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 affirmed education as essential for making progress toward sustainable development. The United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) continues to promote the role of education in pursuing the kind of development that would respect the natural environment, cultures, and the ideals of social justice and equity. One of the major thrusts of education for sustainable development (ESD) is to reorient education at all levels to address sustainability issues. This includes rethinking and revising education from nursery schools through university to include the skills, knowledge, and values related to sustainability.
