ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors use vignettes to illustrate the ways integrative pedagogy was and was not incorporated into her teaching and learning in a social justice context. Integrative pedagogy is a particularly apt approach to social justice because of the emphasis on student centeredness; interdisciplinary subject matter; and the current societal need for greater understanding of different cultures, backgrounds, and ways of being. The liberatory and empowerment goals of integrative pedagogy make it a challenging yet particularly appropriate approach to teaching from a social justice perspective. The emphasis on personal meaning-making and the goal of addressing major issues that challenge students further connects integrative learning and social justice. Subject matter covering human development, leadership, and social justice makes individual reflection commonplace. This type of professional education and the integrative learning incorporated means that application to their personal lives is inevitable.
