ABSTRACT

Team building was effective at Macomb Community College by bringing all aspects of the workforce mission together and bridging the differences between the credit and noncredit programs. A team approach to workforce development issues at Macomb Community College was part of an overall institutional change strategy implemented in 2008 with a change in leadership. Effective workforce development practice mandates not only consulting with individuals from these sectors to formulate a strategy but also directly involving them in the institutional team-building process. The director of the local workforce board was a staunch supporter of college activities, and he regularly participated in many of the workforce team meetings. The goal of uniting the transfer and workforce development missions of the institution was also reinforced through changes in the onboarding of all new faculty through a faculty academy. Teams in the workforce development area are particularly important because of the substantial evolutions of this mission in the modern community college.
