ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the important role of team leadership in a transformational change process using the example of the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) from 1998 to 2005. Team building and professional development at CCBC were viewed as ongoing processes that helped the teams become cohesive units at all levels of the institution. The chancellor's cabinet was designated as the core of the college-wide strategic planning team. At CCBC, the Council on Innovation and Student Learning was created to serve as the guiding team charged with driving the journey from the instruction paradigm to the learning paradigm. Engaging a broad coalition of stakeholders in helping to shape the change paid huge dividends for the institution. To support the change process, the CCBC offered a variety of leadership, professional development, and team-building opportunities to help faculty, administrators, staff, and students build the skills necessary to fully execute the strategic plan.
