ABSTRACT

Based on comprehensive research and interviews with several highly experienced chief executive officers of large multicollege districts across the country, this chapter offers several ideas on organizational realignment and cultural renewal for multicollege leadership teams. The emergence of multiunit community colleges not only reflects the innovative and pioneering spirit of the American community college movement but also demonstrates the community college's commitment to social unity, mobility, and equity from the very beginning. Studies that focused on midlevel community college administrators also provide significant value to community college leadership teams. By leading with student success as the end goal and by adopting a systems perspective, members of multicollege leadership teams can provide a new kind of leadership: integral leadership. The multicollege leadership team must work hard at enriching cross-system communications because communication is important to the success of any organization. The multicollege leadership teams must strive to achieve a satisfactory balance between differentiation and integration.
