ABSTRACT

This chapter serves as a brief overview of conceptualizations of diversity, multicultural and social justice education, and, more specifically, social justice facilitation in the context of higher education and student affairs. Early work on what some may now term social justice in higher education began as efforts to admit groups other than White Anglo-Saxon Protestant men, such as White women and African Americans. The movement that was created to build on the earlier strategies of inclusion and multiculturalism was the field of social justice education. While many educators may understand and support the theory of oppression and social justice education, more is needed to be a good facilitator of social justice learning. Engaging in effective social justice education facilitation is more than applying techniques. Social justice education facilitation is a complex task that should be undertaken with full knowledge of the elements that foster learning, social justice, and a commitment to building authentic relationships.
