ABSTRACT

One of the challenges of sustaining a culture of innovation is the integration of innovations into the day-to-day practices of an organization. This chapter discusses not only the importance of being open to new ideas but also how to make those ideas stick in an institution of higher education. Using the groundbreaking collaboration between Arizona State University and Starbucks as an archetype, it provides practical strategies for how to create sustainable innovations that become embedded in an institutional framework and can lead to future creative endeavors. The chapter discusses what it means to be innovative in higher education and how to make innovation stick in complex, matrixed organizations. Deep personal experiences are often the roots that produce change agents, sparking innovation and making it stick particularly in complex organizations like for-profit companies and institutions of higher education.
