ABSTRACT

This chapter comes from practical experience and unfortunate reality. It is organized into four major sections to target funding efforts: how to determine whether the people need funding, and if so, how much; overview of funding agencies and options; developing a fund-raising plan; and tips for writing successful proposals. Funding agencies fall into two broad categories, public and private. There are also two ways to pursue funding from these categories: solicited and unsolicited. All fund-raising plans should have clear, measurable objectives; a summary of descriptive and contact information of the public and private avenues that the people plan to pursue for funding; a list of the people who can help them (directly or indirectly) with their plan; and a timeline and description of how the people will proceed. Preparing a successful proposal can be a daunting task. Funding service-learning projects is becoming increasingly necessary as nonprofit agency and university budgets are getting tighter.
