ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is divided into three themes. It discusses where service-learning is located on campus and the reasoning and rationale of service-learning placement institutionally. The book addresses institutional and administrative issues of service-learning. It examines service-learning as a springboard for research. It discusses the future evolution of service-learning. The book explores using service-learning in online formats and offers a practical framework for enhancing online learning formats by engaging students in service-learning in their own communities. It brings the reader a community-generated vision for a charter school, governed by its students, showing the unique civic engagement possibilities when all participants are involved in citizenship in the community. The book argues that moral responsibility and civic responsibility are inseparable.
