ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how COIL virtual exchange can be situated within the broader context of the internationalization of higher education. We explore why institutions internationalize, what internationalization means to different institutions, and how institutions are approaching the challenge of engaging all faculty and students in an internationalized learning process through curriculum internationalization. While COIL virtual exchange can involve a mobility component, we situate it within two prominent approaches to internationalizing curriculum that do not require mobility: internationalization at home and global learning. We conclude by posing challenges to the field for utilizing COIL virtual exchange to facilitate more equitable and inclusive internationalization for all.
