ABSTRACT

Research on Asian American students in higher education has been lacking, partly because many funding organizations do not recognize Asian Americans as an underrepresented racial and/ or ethnic minority, which means funds are not necessarily allocated for research on this population. Connections have been made between student involvement and student engagement with student success; however, there are inconsistencies when considering Asian American students specifically. For Asian American students, they are more likely than their peers to ask another student to help them understand course materials, more likely to explain course material to one or more students, more likely to prepare for exams by discussing or working through course material with other students, and more likely to work with other students on course projects or assignments. The connection of Asian Americans to shared culture is crucial because "Asian American students who feel marginalized from both their own ethnic culture and the majority culture are least able to adjust to college".
