ABSTRACT

When I [Katrina] came here [the United States] I had a package of clothes, two kids, and maybe 150 U.S. dollars. Believe me, it was really hard. I came to United States as a single mom with two kids. My husband was actually killed in the war. My husband’s family wanted me to get all my papers done so I could come here with my kids. I came to the United States. Of course it was not easy to travel with two kids. We came, and we didn’t have any money. The kids were sick, and there was a lot of paperwork. The kids started school right away. I applied for a job to start to save a little money and bought a car. Of course my sister-in-law helped with the kids…. I didn’t have anybody else. I learned that you have to stay strong and stay focused. Nothing can hurt me and my life that I cannot get by.
