ABSTRACT

As noted in the previous chapters in this book, given the demographic profile of Latinos in the United States, an increase in Latina/o college participation is expected (U.S. Census, 2000). Moreover, the number of Latinos will represent a large proportion of the student body in higher education. However, extensive research has highlighted the lack of fluid access, the experience of marginalization and isolation of Latina/os in the academy, and the hostile environment toward diversity and multiculturalism that still permeates academia. Consequently, educational institutions need to better serve this population by providing a culturally inclusive campus climate (with proper services, programs, and opportunities) that will foster a positive university environment and quality experience.
