ABSTRACT

This chapter synthesizes recent work the author conducted with her Gardner Institute colleagues as part of a planning grant funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2016–2017 examining the role of digital learning as a vehicle for student success, faculty development, and the transfer experience. It expands on possibilities for digital learning environments to support and build on students’ transfer experiences in the context of their learning. Specifically, the chapter considers the following questions: How do digital environments prepare transfer students to enter their academic experiences? Where do digital technologies support students in facilitating a smooth transition into the learning expectations and spaces set forth for them? Given the needs of transfer students and the transfer pathway, what tools or environments enable and facilitate this transition? The key to enacting our working definition of digital learning returns to the theme of the ecosystem in thinking there is no individual, unit, or app responsible for creating such an environment.
