ABSTRACT

Today, community colleges are one of the largest postsecondary segments in the United States, enrolling almost half of the undergraduate student population. Related to the disconnect between race and transfer, this chapter introduces higher education practitioners and leaders to theoretical frameworks that center the student of color experience in the transfer process. It encourages institutions to create better transfer policies by using these transformative theoretical frameworks: critical race theory in education, transfer receptive culture, and community cultural wealth. The chapter highlights the transfer receptive culture for Latinx students at a predominantly White institution located in the Southwest to understand the challenges Latinx students experience during the post-transfer experience. It describes the various forms of community cultural wealth used by these Latinx students during the post-transfer process. The chapter provides recommendations to develop a transfer receptive culture that acknowledges a student’s community cultural wealth.
