ABSTRACT

I will always remember the exact moment I realized I was trans*. I was watching television on a weekend and kept seeing a detergent commercial. In the commercial, a young girl was bouncing around her room, trying on all different kinds of tights, jumping on her bed, and looking in the mirror. The commercial insisted that to keep this girl’s tights clean, bright, and vibrant, one should use this particular brand of detergent. After seeing this commercial repeatedly, I said to myself, “Gosh, I wish I had those tights.” And then the panic set in.
