ABSTRACT

Theories of Change (TOCs) map pathways to transformation and offer specific and measurable strategies to effect change. The TOC presented in this chapter is particularly suited to the types of academic curricular and cultural changes studied in the CUR Transformations project and involves three overlapping steps: create and prepare, engage and enable, and implement and anchor. Six cross-cutting change factors act through all three phases: (1) identify multiple and diverse institutional leaders; (2) understand and use levers of departmental and institutional change; (3) perform frequent assessments to shape change strategies and celebrate wins; (4) practice effective communication and decision making; (5) take full advantage of synergies between other departmental or institutional change projects; and (6) align with broader departmental and institutional goals.
