ABSTRACT

Jerlando F. L. Jackson grew up on Fort Benning in Georgia. Fort Benning is home to the School of the Americas (now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), which provides “professional education and training to eligible military, law enforcement, and civilian personnel of nations of the Western Hemisphere within the context of democratic principles” (Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, n.d.). His experience growing up on Fort Benning provided him with a childhood rich in cultural interactions and experiences, which would eventually influence his research agenda in graduate school. 1
