ABSTRACT

Two majors in particular, psychology and computer science, developed sophomore-level courses that focused on early exposure to the scientific research article as intentional preparation for senior-level research writing in the capstone course. In the comparable mid-level WI course for computer science majors (on software engineering), students write papers in which they justify software application recommendations; here, the faculty member provides a template that uses many of the conventions of Association for Computing Machinery papers, even though students are not conducting research. The descriptions of writing the scientific research article provided by senior participants indicate that they have internalized the norms of science writing and have been able to repurpose their sense of authorship for this new community. Michelle, a psychology major with a minor in marketing, could explicitly talk about similarities and differences across disciplinary fields.
