ABSTRACT

The idea of transfer is at the heart of the problem of learning; and the problem of learning is at the heart of the future of higher education. The digital revolution has raised new and pointed questions about the aims and purposes of education and, in turn, the capacity of higher education to meet the needs of learners. The matter of “writing transfer” sits in the very center of these questions. Although questions of access, relevance, and the impact of higher education have been at stake through many waves of debate and reform in the past 200 years, what is different about this moment is the challenge posed to traditional institutions of higher education by the explosion of web-based educational providers and resources, many of which are targeted at learning very particular subjects and skills. The integrative vision of education is the core of so-called traditional institutions.
