ABSTRACT

University-wide initiatives demonstrate the school’s commitment to diversity. There are many small-scale initiatives that occur in the academy that are equally as important as the larger-scale programs. This chapter discusses three diversity related initiatives with which the author has been personally involved. While they seem separate, in actuality they build on each other. These initiatives are a part of her commitment to make a difference by training future school psychologists and other education personnel to become cross-culturally competent in their work with culturally different children. The goal of multicultural education course was to provide graduate students with an awareness and knowledge of cultural diversity and its impact in the United States. Cross-cultural competence involves the development of awareness, knowledge, and skill. Writing and obtaining a Personnel Preparation Training Grant from the Office of Special Education Programs at the federal level allowed her to have a forum in which she implemented the ideals she so strongly believed.
