ABSTRACT

A quick set of potentially useful outcome indicators, some of which are probably already being examined at institutions, could include courses with high drop or high fail rates, courses that engender the highest rates of student complaints to chairs or deans, courses or faculty who may receive high rates of negative student evaluations, the measurement of actual student learning outcomes in different courses using empirical instruments such as the Collegiate Learning Assessment, the engagement indicators on the National Survey of Student Engagement and others. Busteed has stated that half of US colleges and universities will be out of business in the next 15 years because they fail to deliver on the fundamental value and core mission of institutions of higher education. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of students indicated that they experienced opportunities in these success areas. In addition to significant need for faculty development, there is a need for enhanced consistency in the curriculum across instructors, programs, and departments.
