ABSTRACT

The IMSR is a transactional model, and although the authors can try to explain the pieces of the system separately, they cannot truly be understood until one steps back and looks at the system as a whole. The IMSR is an experience in synthesis rather than analysis. Experiences and events that occur or are shaped by one part of the model have significant influence on, and react to, other elements of the model, sometimes simultaneously. Of course, situations like this are not unique to first-generation underrepresented students; the elements of the IMSR, to varying degrees, are present in every situation giving rise to student resistance. The authors believe it is important for the readers, to realize that it is not necessary to master the entire IMSR model and be fully conversant with the literature for each element to be able to take effective action to reduce resistance.
