ABSTRACT

As Rice suggests, higher education is in the middle of major paradigm shifts from focus on knowledge to a focus on learning, faculty autonomy to institution building, individualistic work to collaboration, and isolation to greater faculty responsibility for public life. Service-learning is an approach that links community service, academic content, and structured reflection activities. Psychology has a rich tradition of using practice-based education, including laboratories, practica, and internships. Service-learning is effective in helping students develop socially responsive knowledge; it may also facilitate learning in the more traditional domains of content and skills. Professors who have adopted service-learning in their classrooms have used a variety of courses and approaches. Some have required service components, whereas others have made the service optional.
