ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers a unique perspective on the need for service-learning. It discusses the history of business education and the problems facing business education in the 21st century, and suggests that service-learning can aid business schools in their attempt to integrate into their educational programming the broad context and impact that business has on contemporary society. The book argues that service-learning pedagogies provide a mechanism for management educators to combine our traditional worship of the market with solutions to problems of social justice and ecological sustainability. It provides a wholly pragmatic argument for adopting service-learning. The book describes how service-learning enhances their MBA-level corporate policy and strategy course at Notre Dame. It highlights program-wide or institution-based service-learning efforts.
