ABSTRACT

The service-learning component is a major part of the course. This chapter emphasizes its importance by making it a sizable percentage of students’ course grades, and by giving significant time and attention to the students as they work on their projects throughout the semester. It explores in greater detail how service-learning can enhance students’ education. The chapter describes how service-learning benefits students. Students in this course are academically diverse. Most are juniors and seniors majoring in business, and some students are pursuing a master’s degree in public administration. Many students have identified organizations to serve through their current or past employment or volunteer work. Mentoring students throughout their service-learning projects is essential and must be done in several ways. Finally, the chapter concludes with some observations on how service-learning benefits all involved: students, faculty, and community organizations.
