ABSTRACT

Integration of service-learning experiences into higher education has been occurring for decades. More recently, service-learning has been integrated into business courses. This chapter discusses two of the key service-learning opportunities in Montana State University’s business curriculum: the first course taken by first-year business students, the Freshman Seminar; and the last course taken by undergraduate business students, the Senior Seminar, which also constitutes the capstone course. Service-learning in the Freshman Seminar consists of a series of discussions, written reflections, and a direct service project in the community. Service-learning activities serve both as the context for effective team formation and as a vehicle to introduce students to the not-for-profit dimensions of business. Systematic integration of service-learning in the freshman and senior years has been effective in enhancing student learning. Students are given an opportunity to engage in service in ways that will ultimately promote internalization of and commitment to social responsibility and effective citizenship.
