ABSTRACT

This chapter provides management faculty with a framework for extending student learning into the community via the integration of service-learning into the curriculum. It explores the meaning of service-learning specifically within the context of management education, and describes conceptual support for service-learning integration in higher education. Service-learning projects meet all of the requirements while either establishing or reinforcing the importance of business/community relationships and partnerships. The chapter outlines the ways in which service-learning consulting projects address recent calls for change in management education. Two types of conceptual support for service-learning integration can be identified. The first involves its theoretical foundations. The second revolves around current “calls” for changes in management education and the ways in which service-learning represents a pedagogical response to such “calls.” Administration of service-learning initiatives falls into two more or less distinct categories: the faculty members role and university administrator’s role. Each role is critical to successful service-learning course integration.
