ABSTRACT

Residential facilities at community colleges offer unique opportunities for these institutions to bring services to students. Strategic planning on the part of residence life staff and academic advising can result in enhanced convenience and greater awareness of the importance of academic advising as a student support. Policy conditions for housing and residence life programs should also include specific community college campus populations. This chapter addresses how each of the four strategies to “promote learning and college completion” can apply to the residential setting and provide recommendations for practice. The specific strategies outlined in The Heart of Student Success are strengthen classroom engagement, integrate student support into living and learning experiences, expand professional development focused on engaging students, and create policy conditions to promote learning and completion. Conducting a regular needs assessment is a step that community college leaders can take to understand the diversity of their students and their specific residential needs.
