ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of the open-door mission, discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with the policy of open access, and provides insight into the implications this policy has on the work of student affairs. Student assessments have gone beyond cognitive testing to include student readiness indicators and support measures. Despite the accolades that open access receives, there are challenges to supporting a diverse student population. A number of institutions established learning communities as a method of working with students in need of developmental education. Research on the field of higher education includes the following at-risk factors: first-generation college student, placement in developmental or remedial education courses, lower socioeconomic status, being a minority student, and having disabilities. College administrators and faculty face challenges with the growing number of underprepared students. Understanding the motivation and persistence of underprepared students is central to understanding their success.
