ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights critical elements needed for creating effective partnerships between academic and student affairs in the community college setting. It explains student success and the relationship of social involvement and support systems. Through implications of practice, the chapter describes the importance of student development theory as a foundation for collaboration. It presents specific approaches for constructing strong partnerships between academic and student affairs for community college environments. The foundation for supporting academic and student affairs partnerships is understanding student development theory, which creates a basis for understanding college students during their time in the university setting. The chapter explores aspects of student engagement in and outside the classroom and how these experiences lead to success or failure in the community college environment. It also explains the importance of shared responsibility among academic and student affairs staff in relation to student success. Strong faculty and student affairs professionals understand the importance of shared responsibility and of developing the whole student.
