ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the author's own writing practice and how to write consistently as well as how to communicate with as few words as possible. Yet, to write and publish more, she realized and needed to use her analytical and reflective skills to build a sustainable academic writing practice. Academic writing includes more: a host of dispositions, such as persistence and patience, and behaviors, such as organizational skills and time management practices, which can be called on to help to maintain momentum when faced with a plethora of competing demands. The chapter offers several exercises designed to help people learn more about the writer in them. The writing prompts lead writers to explore their history as a writer. The chapter also provides a self-assessment on writing blocks. Both Boice and Rose designed surveys to self-assess underlying patterns with writing blocks. They found that the most common blocks academic writers encounter are perfectionism, rules, procrastination, writing anxiety and impatience.
