ABSTRACT

In the trajectory of academic life, book writing typically comes after students have established their career. Yet, in some colleges and universities, having a published book is one of the criteria for promotion. More specifically, in some disciplines, such as history, having a single-authored book is essential for promotion and advancement within the field. This chapter presents some ideas about the world of academic book publishing as well as offers some concrete steps in developing writers' book proposal and managing the book-writing process. With the help of the publishing partners, writers work may reach a larger audience than single-conference presentations and journal articles. The chapter surveys the five different types of books that writers can publish: textbooks, edited books, professional books, scholarly monographs, and self-published books. The objectives for reflective work are to reflect on and organize their physical environment for efficient work.
