ABSTRACT

Writing a book review is a relatively fast way to get a line on your CV. For those of you unfamiliar with the term CV, I will explain. A CV, or curriculum vitae, is what academics call their résumé. A CV differs substantially from a resume because it is comprehensive and, thus, both longer and much more detailed. If you are relatively new to academe, a CV is a record of all your education, employment, publications, presentations, teaching, grants, awards, committee work, and contributions to professional organizations since you started graduate school. Increasing the number of publication lines on your CV means that you are presenting at conferences, receiving grants, and publishing your work. Committee work, teaching, and university service on search committees are important and expected. However, many promotion and tenure committees pay much closer attention to the number of publication lines on your CV. A published book review will add a line to your CV.
